INDIA. Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru has introduced Gate Z in Terminal 2, a social lounge concept designed around Gen Z preferences.

Described as a first-of-its-kind concept, the lounge responds to evolving passenger demand, with design cues drawn from modern high-street environments and Gen Z culture.

The space was developed to address longer dwell times, offering travellers a shared environment beyond traditional lounges, combining comfort, culture and community.

Retro-chic design at the classic diner-inspired lounge brings a nostalgic twist to the modern airport experience

Located next to the 080 International Lounge, Gate Z incorporates fluid passenger pathways, social-first zones and intuitive layouts, complemented by curved seating, ambient lighting and interactive areas for work, relaxation, socialising and quiet moments.

The design combines global influences with local elements across food, art and interiors, enhanced by a warm palette of cyan and burnt orange, streetlamp-inspired lighting and the use of sustainable materials.

AI-powered features support intuitive navigation and personalised passenger experiences.

Key highlights of the lounge include Bubble & Brew café-bar; The Sipping Lounge, a relaxed space for downtime or conversation; retro-inspired eatery Subway Diner; and The Amphizone, a modern amphitheatre for screenings, pop-ups and spontaneous gatherings.

The name Gate Z emerged from a nationwide contest, inviting India’s young creatives to help design an experience for them, with submissions from students, designers and professionals across the country, capturing a sense of place and inclusivity.

The lounge merges contemporary global design with Indian cultural elements, radiating vibrant colours and lively energy

Bangalore Airport Services Limited CEO George Bennet Kuruvilla said, “Gate Z reflects BLR Airport’s intent to design spaces that respond to how travel is experienced today, as part of a broader lifestyle rather than a moment in transit.

“Inspired by values of inclusivity, authenticity and connection, the lounge brings together comfort, culture and community in a way that feels intuitive and welcoming across age groups.

“By inviting young Indians to name Gate Z, we extended this philosophy of co-creation, ensuring the space is shaped by the mindset it represents and remains relevant, expressive and people-first.”
