Betty Boop and Popeye star in Jean Paul Gaultier summer fragrances

La Maison Jean Paul Gaultier is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year

Puig fragrance brand Jean Paul Gaultier is set to launch two limited edition Eaux Fraîches scents, featuring cartoon characters Betty Boop and Popeye, into the travel retail channel.

Created by perfumers Daphne Bugey and Nathalie Gracia-Cetto, Classique Eau Fraiche Betty Boop and Le Mâle Eau Fraiche Popeye are said to reflect the “sexy, light-hearted, fun spirit” of the two cartoon characters.

A refresh of Jean Paul Gaultier’s iconic Le Mâle and Classique fragrances, Popeye is an aldehydic oriental fougère and Betty Boop is an aquatic floral oriental. Le Mâle Eau Fraiche Popeye features notes of neroli blossom, mint, sage, Tonka bean, sandalwood and vanilla. Classique Eau Fraiche Betty Boop includes top notes of ginger and lemon sorbet atop a heart of Labdanum Neo and vanilla, while the base blends musk.

To further support the fragrance launches, Jean Paul Gaultier has created a comic strip called Spinach and Stockings which depicts the adventures of Popeye and Betty’s trip across the Atlantic to Paris where they meet Jean Paul Gaultier.

Both eau de toilettes will be launched in travel retail locations in Europe and the Middle East from April, with a roll-out to the Americas and Asia Pacific travel retail in June and July respectively.

High-profile promotions are planned at major airport locations with Dufry Group throughout the UK, including Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester and Birmingham, and in Spain at Alicante, Malaga and Mallorca airports, as well as Cambodia and Bali. Activations are also planned with Gebr. Heinemann at Istanbul, Oslo, Budapest and Frankfurt airports.

Classique Eau Fraiche Betty Boop is available as a 120ml edp and Le Mâle Eau Fraiche Popeye as a 125ml edp
