Bidding a fond farewell to Julián Díaz

From Dubai to Switzerland and Saudi Arabia with a fond farewell to Julián Díaz along the way

He has captained the ship through the most tumultuous, sustained and severe storm in our industry’s history. He has done it with a trademark determination and a remarkable calm. Al Mal Tiempo, Buena Cara – when the going gets tough, the tough get going.

SWITZERLAND. Today marks a changing of the guard at Dufry as Julián Díaz steps down as Chief Executive Officer to be replaced by Xavier Rossinyol and we are marking the occasion with a special pictorial story.

It’s not often the management and team at Dufry can keep a secret from the long-time CEO.

But that’s exactly what happened over recent weeks amid intensive planning for a fond farewell for Díaz as he prepared to depart the role he had held for 18 extraordinary years.

The event was held at the Reithalle Wenkenhof, nestled in the beautiful Wenkenpark a short drive from Dufry headquarters in Basel.

The Moodie Davitt Report Founder & Chairman Martin Moodie was honoured to be asked to speak about Díaz’s extraordinary contribution to the industry and his qualities as a man.

He joined Dufry Chairman of the Board Juan Carlos Torres and Díaz’s successor Xavier Rossinyol who also delivered fulsome tributes.

Martin Moodie: “It is no overstatement to say that Julián – and the company he has led so well – has reshaped the travel retail channel through much of the 21st century”
Xavier Rossinyol spoke of “my most important mentor” and singled out Julián Díaz’s rare combination of tough and demanding leadership balanced by a deep humanity and the ability to bring the best out of people. He closed by raising a toast to “my best boss but also a great friend”.
Juan Carlos Torres, who has known Julián since the 1990s, spoke of his straightforward personality and leadership qualities before concluding “but in the end what is more important to me is that he is my good friend”.

Julián Díaz was presented with a unique gift, a replica of Andy Warhol’s Marilyn made up of small jpg photos of Dufry team members all around the globe
Typically, Díaz deflected any praise for Dufry’s many achievements, praising instead his team’s “incredible” contribution. “One thing is for sure, these have been the best years of my life,” he said.

Below are more pictorial memories of a memorable and emotional evening.
