BRAZIL. A Decree from Brazil’s Ministry of Economy has confirmed the country’s duty free allowance for airport duty free shop purchases will double from 1 January 2020.
As reported, President Jair Bolsonaro announced last week on his Twitter account the doubling of the limit for airport duty free shop purchases from US$500 to US$1,000 and a rise in the duty free allowance for Brazilians crossing into Paraguay to shop from US$300 to US$500. An announcement from the Ministry of Finance has now confirmed the increase for airport stores.

The news represents a big boost for Brazilian travel retail and for dominant retailer Dufry in particular.
Conmmenting on the increased limit, José Luis Donagaray, Secretary General of the South American Duty Free Association ASUTIL, told The Moodie Davitt Report: “It’s a very good development that represents the result of very good and hard work by Dufry Brazil and ASUTIL. We expect the regulations to be published next week.”
