BULGARIA. Passenger traffic at Bulgaria’s Bourgas airport has climbed by +16% since the beginning of the tourist season in 2005.
In May and June alone a total of 327,703 passenger used the airport, up by 78,944 compared to the same period last year.
The number of passengers this summer is expected to exceed 1.5 million, beating the 2004 summer record, when Bourgas airport was named as Bulgaria’s leading international airport.
Bulgaria’s airports are currently the subject of some controversy. Last month, Copenhagen Airports signed a 35-year concession agreement to run the country’s two airports, Bourgas and Varna. However, two unsuccessful bidders have since lodged an appeal which is set to be heard in September.
Last year 2.6 million passengers used Bourgas and Varna airports. Copenhagen Airports was seeking to upgrade the commercial facilities to drive revenues.
