CANADA. Airport duty free sales in Canada surged by +8% year-on-year in the first six months of 2013, hitting C$131 million, while land border sales in the country dipped slightly (-0.3%) to C$59 million.
That’s according to the latest figures provided by the Canadian Border Services Agency and released by the Frontier Duty Free Association (FDFA).
In June alone, airport sales climbed by +11% to C$24 million while land border sales fell by -2.93% to C$13.4 million.

The regional land border numbers break down as follows:
Prairie region: The region had sales of C$868,000 in June (-3% year-on-year) and C$4.5 million in the first half (+0.79%).
Pacific region: Sales in June were C$2.17 million, a fall of -4% compared to a year earlier. The half-year figure for the Pacific region was C$11 million, up by +3.3%.
Ontario: Sales in Ontario in June hit C$7.3 million, down by -2%. In the half sales were C$32.6 million, a dip of -1%.
Atlantic/Quebec: The sales figure for June was C$3 million, which was a decrease of -3% compared to June 2012. For the period January-June 2013, the Atlantic and Quebec regions had sales of C$11 million, down by -1.7%.
The main categories that dominated sales in land border duty free in June were as follows (in order of sales highest to lowest):
1. Alcohol (liquor, liqueur, wine, coolers)
2. Tobacco, Cigars, Loose Tobacco
3. Perfume, Cosmetics, Skincare
4. Food
5. Beer (beer, malt-based coolers)
6. Jewellery, Watches, Clocks
7. Accessories (purses, wallets, sunglasses, etc.)
8. Clothing (including hats, fur, leather)
9. Souvenirs
10. Office and Travel Supplies
11. Glassware, crystal, china, figurines, porcelain
12. Other
13. Crafts/Arts
14. Electronics, Cameras, Binoculars, etc.
