Carrasco International Airport transforms car park into venue for shows and film screenings

URUGUAY. Montevideo Carrasco International Airport is opening its main terminal-facing car park as a drive-in space for live shows, concerts and the screening of films. It is one of several initiatives through which the airport company is adapting its facilities in the face of current COVID-19 challenges.

The centrepiece of the venture – which is a collaboration between the airport, Life Cinemas and Magnolio Media Group – is a giant film-quality screen measuring 20m x 16m.

Commercial acumen: Carrasco International Airport has come up with an innovative new use for one of its car parks, with a giant screen the centrepiece

The first event is planned for Thursday 21 May and the initiative will remain active for an initial two months.

Over this duration, the airport said there are plans for more than 80 events of varying types for an expected 20,000+ audience.

Payment for entry and other services such as the delivery of food & beverage to vehicles is 100% digital, the airport said

Following social distancing guidelines, and with health protocols approved by the Uruguayan Ministry of Public Health, the maximum capacity for each event is 90 vehicles.

The airport is also offering packages for private functions between Mondays and Wednesdays, with the main sponsor receiving benefits including brand communication on three airport social media sites and company branding on the giant screen.

There is also a strong corporate social responsibility element to the innovative venture – spectators to all events are encouraged to bring and donate non-perishable food, which the airport will collect and organise distribution to the needy.
