Frankfurt T3 opening supports Fraport retail performance in Q2 despite weak passenger traffic
Retail revenues per passenger hit €3.24, just below last year’s first-half performance after what the company cited as a weak Q1 for retail but a stronger Q2 trend driven by a positive effect from the new Terminal 3 at Frankfurt Airport.
Middle East routes saw a decline of -20.2% on the same month last year against the backdrop of war in the region, with the key North American market down by -3%.

The latest figures from the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines underscore the impact of geopolitical uncertainty on airline operating conditions as travel costs continue to rise.
“What makes this result particularly pleasing is that international passenger numbers grew despite global uncertainty and disruption in the Middle East during the second half of the financial year,” said Brisbane Airport CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff De Graaff.
While second-quarter passenger traffic softened amid Middle East disruption, Sydney Airport delivered +1.5% first-half growth as strong demand across Asia helped sustain international travel.
Leading airports group Aena highlights a “lack of visibility” about travel in the second half, amid the expiry of fuel hedges and uncertainty caused by the conflict in the Middle East.
Duty-free spend per head – principally from TAV Airports’ 50% share in ATU Duty Free alongside Gebr. Heinemann – leapt +20% to €9.70 in the period.
A Heathrow statement says the +2.2% retail revenue increase was supported “by continued demand for premium services, increased food & beverage sales with new outlets and a boost in bookshop revenues.”
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport again ranked top overall across international and domestic combined, with just over 106.3 million passengers.
The USA welcomed 4.39 million foreign arrivals in the month, a marginal +0.2% increase year-on-year, but Air4Casts points to a shifting mix in source markets during the FIFA World Cup tournament.
Airside spend per departing passenger at the Swiss gateway climbed by an encouraging +3.3% year-on-year to reach CHF23.50 (US$28.86) in the half.
Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas recorded the highest number of passengers of any Spanish airport in June, representing a rise of +4.5% compared to the same month last year.
