Dan Cappell leaves Abu Dhabi Airports Company to join Australia Pacific Airports in Melbourne in key commercial post

UAE/AUSTRALIA. Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC) Vice President of Non Aeronautical Revenue and Business Dan Cappell is leaving the group to join Australia Pacific Airports (APAM), operator of Melbourne and Launceston Airports, as General Manager Retail & Car Parks.

Cappell, one of the most industry’s most highly regarded airport commercial executives, leaves ADAC on 18 June and will commence his new role on 1 July, based in Melbourne. There he replaces the long-serving Gilly Gray, who is stepping down after 15 years.

ADAC Chief Commercial Officer Mohammed Al Bulooki said: “ADAC is sincerely sorry that Dan has decided to leave the company. During his 11 years in the Middle East Dan has made an enormous contribution to our business, and I thank him sincerely for his commitment, passion and the results he has delivered.

“ADAC fully understand the reasons for Dan’s departure and wish him the very best of success in his new position.”

APAM Chief Executive Officer Chris Woodruff said that the appointment followed an extensive global search. He commented: “With his significant international retail and business development experience, Dan is well placed to further develop the retail and car park businesses to deliver a world-class experience for passengers and customers.

“I would like to also take this opportunity to thank Gilly Gray for her years of dedicated service to APAM. During her 15 years Gilly has driven extensive enhancements and upgrades to both the retail and car park businesses to make them significant aspects of our business.”

Commenting on his resignation from ADAC, Dan Cappell said: “I have had an incredible 11 years in the Middle East, during which time Abu Dhabi has undergone amazing development. I am honoured and proud that I was given the opportunity to play a small role in the development of the airport and its commercial business.

I leave at an exciting stage in ADAC’s development with the new Midfield Terminal under construction, which when completed will be a majestic gateway to the capital of the United Arab Emirates. I am confident that the business is in great hands going forwards and wish ADAC every success they deserve in the future.”

Cappell, born in the UK, is one of the few industry executives to have worn all three Trinity hats – supplier, retailer and airport operator. His various senior roles in recent years have included General Manager of Néstle International Travel Retail, Deputy Managing Director of Abu Dhabi Duty Free and In Flight Catering, and General Manager Operations for Aer Rianta International-Middle East.
