QATAR. Doha International Airport has welcomed its first passengers through the airport’s new Arrivals terminal.
The Arrivals terminal, which opened on 19 December, is the third new public terminal in four years to open at the airport and will receive all arriving air passengers into the State of Qatar.
The rapid growth of national airline Qatar Airways has fuelled the expansion of existing airport facilities to accommodate passenger growth while construction of the country’s New Doha International Airport is completed, with a scheduled opening in 2012.
Doha International Airport, which currently handles more than 15 million passengers a year, has undergone a dramatic change over the past three years, virtually doubling in size to cope with the huge demand for air travel to and from Qatar, which has been spearheaded by the huge infrastructure improvements taking place in the country.
National carrier Qatar Airways is the main operator of flights to and from Doha. There are over 30 international airlines from Europe, Middle East and Asia operating scheduled flights to the city.
