UAE. Dubai Duty Free turns 35 today and the birthday party is in full swing.
On 20 December 1983 the retailer opened its doors for the first time, generating some US$44,000 in its first day of sales.
Today’s takings are certain to be a whole lot higher, driven by a celebratory -25% discount offer on selected goods. So high, in fact, that Dubai Duty Free’s ambition to break through the US$2 billion barrier for the first time is likely to be achieved in coming days, well before year-end.

Patrick Dorais is best known for selling Al Nassma camel milk chocolate in duty free but today, besides celebrating his company’s hugely successful partnership with Dubai Duty Free at Dubai International, he’s also doubling as a roving reporter (unpaid, sorry Patrick) for The Moodie Davitt Report. Patrick’s images capture the extraordinary mood of celebratory exuberance at Dubai Duty Free today.
On that note, look out this afternoon for our special e-Zine dedicated to the Dubai Duty Free story, told largely in pictures, video and audio. It is, we promise, a remarkable publication.
