Düsseldorf Airport reveals DUS Rhein Lounge as ‘Destination of Excellence’ proposition takes shape

GERMANY. Düsseldorf Airport has launched its DUS Rhein Lounge in Pier B. The two-level lounge spans approximately 935sq m.

The hospitality facility offers seating for around 320 guests including 170 seats on the lower level, 120 on the upper floor and a further 30 places on a 130sq m outdoor terrace overlooking the apron.

The opening forms part of the airport’s broader ambition to position itself as a ‘Destination of Excellence’, with a focus on elevating passenger dwell time through enhanced comfort, dining, design and service.

The lounge has been completely redesigned to provide dedicated zones for socialising, relaxation, quiet retreat and work.

Clean architectural lines, premium materials and high-quality lighting and acoustics create a calm environment distinct from the surrounding terminal activity, while furniture from Walter Knoll helps define the various spaces.

The lounge’s design draws inspiration from the Rhine River, with references to Düsseldorf and the wider region integrated throughout the interior.

Local landmarks and cultural symbols, including the city’s Old Town, the traditional cartwheeler figure and the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex, feature within a concept that blends regional identity with an international aesthetic.

A key feature is the terrace, which offers unrestricted views across the airfield and aircraft operations.

Düsseldorf Airport described the space as one of the airport’s most impressive viewing locations and a focal point of the overall lounge experience.

Food & beverage plays a central role in the proposition. Developed in partnership with Klüh Catering, the concept moves away from a traditional buffet model in favour of a curated menu featuring around 20 dishes grouped into four themed categories.

The offer ranges from Heimatliebe (love of home) to Fernweh (wanderlust), with a digital menu designed to simplify navigation and ordering.

The lounge also incorporates an arts programme through a partnership with Essen-based gallery Obrist. The collaboration will bring rotating exhibitions by internationally recognised artists to the facility, with the inaugural exhibition, Moving Colors, showcasing works by Jürgen Paas, Annette Sauermann and Hanna Roeckle.

Düsseldorf Mayor Dr Stephan Keller said, “Lounges are nowadays a key component of a premium travel experience at international airports as well as at major trade fairs and business locations.

“With the new Rhein Lounge, however, Düsseldorf Airport is creating far more than just a comfortable waiting area. The spacious terrace, offering an impressive view of the apron, turns the visit into a special experience.

“At the same time, the lounge gives international guests the opportunity to work, prepare for meetings, or refresh themselves in a pleasant atmosphere before their onward journey. It thus combines comfort, functionality and hospitality in an outstanding way.”

Düsseldorf Airport CEO Lars Redeligx added: “Our commitment to quality is immediately palpable here. Design, service and atmosphere come together to create an experience that significantly enhances the time spent before departure.

“DUS Rhein Lounge is a key element in our journey towards becoming a ‘Destination of Excellence’. We already see guests arrive early to dine in the new lounge or enjoy an aperitif on the terrace before their flight.”

Access to the DUS Rhein Lounge can be purchased through Düsseldorf Airport’s website for €49 (US$56) per person, with additional pricing options available. Walk-up access is also available at reception, subject to capacity.

The lounge is included within selected fare packages offered by airlines including Iberia, Air France, Finnair, KLM, SAS, Condor and Aegean Airlines, while Priority Pass members are also eligible for access.

Entry is also included within the airport’s Premium P1 parking package for customers booking stays of four days or more.
