Electronic accessories brand Breffo in travel retail sales drive

UK electronics accessories manufacturer Breffo has teamed up with travel retail sales specialists New Thing to break into the travel retail channel with its Spiderpodium.

Established in the UK in 2009, Breffo identified a market need for a universal holder for the growing smartphone and hand-held gadget industry and went on to create the Spiderpodium. Today, Breffo’s Spiderpodium and Spiderpodium tablet are stocked in over 5,000 stores across the UK, including Boots, Halfords and Jessops.

The company described its move into travel retail as “a natural progression” given the extraordinary growth in the tablet and smartphone sector, which is set to double by 2016.

New Thing has secured numerous inflight listings for Breffo through Airshop including LuxAir and Thomas Cook Belgium, and more recently through ISG on Dragonair. Early sales results have been “impressive”, according to the company, with the Spiderpodium Tablet the best performing in terms of sales revenue in the newly introduced gift category onboard Thomas Cook and LuxAir. Sales with Dragonair since June have also been encouraging with repeat orders already placed, Breffo claimed.

Underlining the potential of Breffo in travel retail, Breffo Business Development Manager Dan Ashman said: “Worldwide mobile phone sales to end users totalled 1.75 billion units in 2012, a -1.7 % decline from 2011 sales. Smartphones however continued to drive overall mobile phone sales and the fourth quarter of 2012 saw record smartphone sales of 207.7 million units, up +38.3% from the same period last year. This has had a direct effect on sales of our Spiderpodium with an increase in sales last year of +413% compared with the same period from the previous year.”

Ashman continued: “The concept of the Spiderpodium was dreamt up on a plane and the potential for inflight sales of Breffo accessories is huge. A recent study by APEX and CEA found that 69% of all passengers use smartphones and tablet PCs on board as entertainment to listen to music, watch movies, read, and play games – what better way to secure the device in a comfortable position than the Breffo Spiderpodium?”

Breffo is offering travel retail customers savings of -20% off the domestic retail price with the Spiderpodium retailing at £12 (domestic RRP £15) and the Spiderpodium tablet retailing at £20 (domestic RRP £25).

With seasoned travellers in mind, Breffo has also launched a travel retail exclusive – the Breffo Duo Pack which includes both the Spiderpodium and Spiderpodium tablet at the special discount price of £25, offering -38% off the £40 domestic retail price.

New tech-based products are in the pipeline for 2014, and Breffo is already considering new bespoke products for the travel retail sector.
