BELGIUM. European Travel Retail Council (ETRC) President Frank O’Connell is today addressing the powerful EU Stakeholders’ Advisory Group on Aviation Security in Brussels. His presentation is an opportunity for the airport retail industry to underline the integrity of its supply chain and to address the issues facing retailers under new security rules, which will take effect in early November.
John Hume of Hume Brophy Communications, who has been lobbying Brussels decision-makers on the security issue, told The Moodie Report: “This is a quite a coup for the industry. The group is all-powerful in matters of aviation security and was the body that made the key recent recommendations on security that affect the airport business.”

He added: “It shows the Commission’s willingness to listen. Frank will have the chance to explain how the trade sees the sealed bag system working and how we can create long-term solutions that address both security retail concerns. It’s also important because these new rules will be reviewed every six months, so we have to take every opportunity to underline the trade’s credentials.”
In his address, O’Connell will call on EU Member State governments to support the European Commission’s proposal on the use and mutual recognition of the sealed bag system.
The ETRC will also call on EU member states “to implement systems and regulations common across all EU airports in order to allow the orderly introduction of the new regime, avoid further passenger confusion and enable the delivery of common EU wide communication messages to passengers. Such an approach will minimise significantly the impact of the new measures on airport shopping and customer convenience.”
