Gatwick adds brand power in final phase of South Terminal development

London Gatwick Head of Retail Spencer Sheen: “Opening [these] stores is based on the customer research that we conduct and is another exciting step in our extensive redevelopment of the South Terminal”

UK. Gatwick Airport has revealed that Zara, Ted Baker and Snow+Rock will all open stores in the South Terminal in December, marking the final phase of the terminal’s £21 million (US$33 million) redevelopment.

Eleven new or refreshed stores will open in December, taking the total number of shops opened since July to 22.

Zara’s 4,500sq ft outlet will be the brand’s largest airport store to date, while Ted Baker’s 1,000sq ft store will look to replicate the success of its North Terminal fashion store and bespoke Gatwick accessories outlet.

Snow+Rock will open its first ever airport store, with a premium leisure offering with a focus on footwear, accessories and clothing. The 1,000sq ft store will aim to appeal to passengers travelling during the ski season and more broadly on outdoor-focused holidays.

London Gatwick Head of Retail Spencer Sheen said: “Gatwick wants to be London’s airport of choice in every area. For retail, we aim to deliver a mix of stores that are fashionable, relevant and will enhance the experience of travelling through the airport.

“Opening stores such as Zara, Ted Baker and Snow+Rock is based on the customer research that we conduct and is another exciting step in our extensive redevelopment of the South Terminal.”

Among the 11 stores already opened in the South Terminal since July have been airport firsts for Ernest Jones and Aspinal of London, as well as a 6,000sq ft Harrods fashion and accessories department store.

The airport company said the transformation followed extensive passenger research and feedback. It found that travellers wanted to see a much more diverse spread of shops and restaurants, a good mix of luxury and high street or well-known international brands, as well as more choice in the premium leisure sector.

Ted Baker Brand Communication Director Craig Smith said: “Quality airport shopping has now become such an integral part of the overall travel experience. Our move to open at Gatwick South builds on the success of our expanding portfolio of airport stores where we are already seeing great success and this new location will only strengthen that.”

Snow+Rock Group Marketing Director Kevin Young said: “This is a key travel hub for UK skiers and many other travellers and will drive both sales and brand awareness as millions of people pass our shopfront each year.

“We will be offering pick-up items and more indulgent purchases at ‘tax-free’ prices with branded areas showcasing ranges from Salomon and Icebreaker plus selected highlights from our winter sports and outdoor ranges.”

By the end of the year, 22 new stores will have opened in the South Terminal

The airport has been running a marketing campaign to tie in with the new openings in the South Terminal since 1 July, giving passengers the chance to download or print an exclusive voucher passport enabling them to save up to £400 at the airport.
