Global Brands Group, the master licensee for world football body FIFA, has scored a vital first goal in travel retail |
SINGAPORE. Global Brands Group is set to take a first and major step into the travel retail channel after being awarded the sports concession at Singapore Changi Airport’s new Terminal 3, due to open in early 2008. The group bid as Global Brands (Football).
Global Brands Group is one of the world’s leading product licensing, brand management and retail development partners for sports, entertainment and lifestyle brands. It is the master licensee for world football body FIFA and plans to open a series of football-related stores throughout the travel retail world. Singapore Changi offers the first opportunity and is considered a major gain by the group.,
Global Brands Group (www.globalbrandsgroup.com) has a host of other powerful clients including Warner Bros, IPC Media and Planet Hollywood.
In November 2005 it appointed Nuance Group Asia Pacific Chief Executive John Moore to create a new Australian operation and as the group’s Head of Travel Retail. Reacting to the Changi success story, Moore told The Moodie Report this week: “We are delighted that one of our very first FIFA World – Official Stores will be located at Singapore’s Changi Airport, one of the world’s best and busiest airports.
“We believe our timing is perfect for the introduction of an authentic lifestyle football retail concept into the global travel retail market. Airports and operators around the world are rapidly expanding the specialty store market and FIFA World – Official Stores will have immense customer appeal in every corner of the planet – after all, it is the world’s favourite game”.
Global Brands (Football) was the top bidder for the T3 contract, offering 15% of the total monthly gross sales; or a minimum monthly guarantee of S$37,500 per month, whichever is higher. It headed rival offers from Market One and VGO Corp. The contract is for three years from the opening of the new terminal.
Global Brands CEO and Co-Chairman Mark Matheny, was enthusiastic about the new partnership with Changi Airport. He said: “GBG relocated its worldwide corporate headquarters to Singapore in 2005 as it is an ideal environment for us to grow our intellectual property business. We are delighted that one of our very first FIFA World stores will be located in our corporate ‘home’ as we believe with Changi Airport’s unequivocal reputation as one of the world’s best and busiest airports, we will undoubtedly reach our brand marketing and sales objectives.”
Martin Darby, GBG’s Senior Vice President Retail, said: “FIFA World is the ultimate football lifestyle brand and will appeal to those who live for football, those who play football and those who are inspired by the beautiful game. The store will combine exclusive authentic World Cup inspired merchandise, with topical product and promotions related to FIFA and football events around the world.”
Look out for a major interview with the group in The Moodie Report Print Edition next month.
