HONG KONG. Hong Kong International Airport has launched a five-month arts and culture programme.

The concept of Sense of Place should embrace far more than local products; it should also reach into other elements – including iconic individuals. In Hong Kong they don’t come any more iconic than the man who famously invented Jeet Kune Do (the way of the intercepting fist). Bruce Lee.

It is the second such festival at the airport and follows ‘Hong Kong Classics: Art, Culture and Music’, which was held last year.

This year’s festival features a range of performances and exhibitions, according to Airport Authority Hong Kong. These include Cantonese opera, classical and jazz music, photo exhibitions and cityscape sketches. Each showcases Hong Kong’s “multicultural ambiance” as well as its local artists and musicians.

The opening ceremony was attended by Secretary for Transport and Housing Professor Anthony Cheung Bing-leung; Airport Authority Hong Kong Art and Culture Advisory Committee Chairlady Anita Fung; and Airport Authority Hong Kong Chief Executive Officer Fred Lam.

“To enhance passengers’ overall airport experience, we cannot only rely on hardware improvements. We must also introduce new services and ideas catering to passengers’ different needs. This is why [we] established the Art and Culture Advisory Committee last year – to showcase local art and culture at [the airport],” said Fung.

“We hope to use the airport as a stage to showcase our lively local culture and arts to passengers from around the world.”
