CHINA. Ian Macleod Distillers (IMD) has partnered with China Duty Free Group (CDFG) to launch the oldest Glengoyne Highland single malt whisky, a travel retail-exclusive.
The Glengoyne 53 Year Old is priced at US$33,000 and presented in a hand-blown decanter, with only 100 pieces available worldwide. It features with CDFG this month prior to its roll-out with other selected travel retailers.
The launch marks the start of a “highly strategic” relationship with CDFG, IMG said.
China Duty Free Group President Charles Chen commented: “The addition of Glengoyne to our portfolio is very exciting and we relish the global launch opportunity to share Glengoyne 53 Year Old with whisky enthusiasts in the fast-growing single malt whisky market of China duty free, especially in Hainan.
“We expect much excitement through in-store and digital showcasing and we are delighted to be the launch partner for this iconic product.”
Ian Macleod Distillers’ Global Travel Retail Director William Ovens said: “This launch marks the start of an exciting new partnership between CDFG and IMD. We have agreed an exciting plan for the launch of several products across our malt portfolio and some of these very special products will be exclusive to CDFG.”
The 70cl Glengoyne 53 Year Old has a 45.8% ABV. Its decanter features an engraved goose, representing the migration of geese to the Glen each winter.
The decanter is housed – along with a 2.5cl miniature – in an oak display box which, according to Ian MacLeod Distillers, marks an industry-first. The box’s inner fittings can be removed for other uses.
The 53 Year Old whisky is described as “the epitome of Glengoyne Distillery’s unhurried and uncompromising approach to whisky making”, offering whisky aficionados a “very special opportunity to own a piece of Glengoyne history”.
