Family-owned spirits company Ian Macleod Distillers (IMD) has unveiled Laggan Bay Distillery on Islay.
The opening, the island’s 11th whisky distillery, was marked on 2 April with the filling of the first cask. The event was attended by IMD Managing Director Leonard Russell, his son, IMD Head of International Business Development Tom Russell, and Distillery Manager Malcolm Rennie.
Laggan Bay Distillery is led by Rennie, an Islay native with extensive experience in Scotch whisky production. He has assembled a new team focused on developing a house style rooted in clarity of spirit and balanced flavour.
The distillery takes its name from Laggan Bay’s surrounding coastline, characterised by its Atlantic exposure and natural wildlife. Bottlenose dolphins, frequently seen in the bay, have inspired the venue’s logo.

Laggan Bay Distillery will contribute to the island’s economy through ongoing investment in local employment. In addition, the site will participate in this year’s Fèis Ìle festival, opening its doors to the public on 31 May for an inaugural event that will offer visitors an early introduction to the location and its team.
The distillery has been designed with a clear focus on sustainable environmental management. Wetlands are incorporated to manage liquid waste and support local wildlife, while renewable energy solutions will be explored in collaboration with local partners.

IMD Managing Director Leonard Russell said: “Filling the first cask at Laggan Bay is an important moment for us as a family business. We have built this distillery with a long‑term vision, knowing the whisky will grow into its own character.
“We are not here to replicate what Islay already has – we’re here to add to it, with a whisky shaped by its place, our people, and the choices we make from the start.”
Distillery Manager Malcolm Rennie said: “Coming home to Islay to help shape Laggan Bay single malt is something I’m proud of. It’s a rare chance to create a new whisky with a strong sense of place, rooted in the character and traditions that define Islay.”
Further details on the distillery’s spirit style, cask programme and future releases are expected to be revealed as the whisky develops. ✈
