Images of the Day: Breathtaking vistas await as Qaqortoq Airport opens in Greenland

Our regular feature, brought to you in association with Duty Free Global from Ireland, celebrates memorable scenes, moments, launches and campaigns related to the global aviation and travel retail sphere.

GREENLAND. Today’s selection, in association with Duty Free Global, may represent one of the very few stories to have featured on our site down the years from Greenland, an autonomous territory (so get your nasty mitts off, Donald Trump) of the Kingdom of Denmark. But the images are surely among the most breathtaking in our entire archive.

Qaqortoq Airport, under the auspices of Greenland Airports, opened yesterday (16 April), becoming a new gateway to the region, strengthening connectivity and creating new opportunities for travel, business and tourism, Greenland Airports noted.

“A new chapter in Greenland’s aviation infrastructure begins today,” Greenland Airports said.

Are we looking at the world’s most wondrous airport runway setting?

“Opening Qaqortoq Airport is a major step for South Greenland and for Greenland as a whole,” commented Greenland Airports CEO Jens Lauridsen.

“For the first time, it will be possible to travel directly to Qaqortoq, creating new opportunities for residents, businesses and visitors.”

Greenland Airports has a thriving duty-free operation both on-airport and online

The airport includes a 1,500-metre runway, modern terminal facilities and Greenland’s first digital Aerodrome Flight Information Service tower, designed to support safe and efficient operations from day one

“Qaqortoq Airport represents a significant investment in connectivity, accessibility and future development. It has been a complex and demanding project, made possible by the dedicated efforts of our employees and partners,” Lauridsen added.
