NEW ZEALAND. Lagardère AWPL has been awarded a key concession to operate five Relay travel essentials stores at Auckland Airport following an open tender.
Welcoming the agreement, the joint venture retailer (formed by the combination of Lagardère Travel Retail Pacific and Australian travel retailer AWPL in January 2022) pledged to deliver ‘next-generation’ travel essentials stores.
Lagardère Travel Retail has operated travel essentials shops at Auckland Airport – New Zealand’s major international and domestic gateway – since 2011.
Starting in mid-2024, Lagardère AWPL will open the quintet of next-generation flagship Relay stores, featuring the newest innovations in store design, product choice, customer experience and sustainability.
In a joint statement, Lagardère AWPL Co-CEOs Costa Kouros and Przemek Lesniak said: “We are incredibly proud of the vision for the future of travel essentials our team presented to Auckland Airport and look forward to bringing the very best of our local and global expertise to Aotearoa’s [the Māori-language name for New Zealand -Ed] gateway.”
Auckland Airport Chief Commercial Officer Mark Thomson said, “We’re delighted to continue the partnership with Lagardère AWPL, bringing much-loved mainstay products for customers on the go.
“They bring a contemporary take on travel convenience essentials and we look forward to their additional stores opening.”
Lagardère AWPL operates 19 stores across Auckland Airport’s two terminals, including Aelia Duty Free, Relay, Hub Convenience, MAC, Benefit, an All Blacks boutique, Cape to Bluff, Around New Zealand, Merino Collection and TikiTour. ✈
