UK. London Gatwick Airport’s plans for its future as a two-runway airport have been shortlisted for a prestigious architectural award – even before the construction of its second runway has been approved.
The designs by Sir Terry Farrell are among several other emerging infrastructure projects shortlisted for the Future Infrastructure Award at the World Architecture Festival in Singapore this week.
Other shortlisted projects include: Linköping Central Station in Sweden, Istanbul Grand Airport, Casbalanca’s new high-speed railway station and Astana Station in Kazakhstan.

Future vision: Gatwick’s plans rest on approval for a second runway |
As reported, a decision on whether Gatwick will be allowed to build a second runway is expected to be taken next year. A runway extension or additional runway at London Heathrow is an alternative, while a greenfield airport at another location has been ruled out by the UK Airports Commission.
Gatwick’s airport design features an easy-to-navigate layout for passengers, with the latest technologies applied to seamless and non-intrusive processes. Shorter taxiing times on the apron will also ensure fewer delays, the airport said.
Gatwick CEO Stewart Wingate said: “Gatwick’s vision is of two world-class airports in London helping to connect the country to the rest of the world. A second runway at Gatwick would deliver greater competition, helping to drive down the costs of travel and exporting as well as improving service standards at all airports. The design of an expanded Gatwick would be the envy of the world.”
