Moldova Chisinau Airport passenger traffic hits record high – 01/02/05

MOLDOVA. Passenger traffic at Moldova Chisinau International Airport reached an all-time high of 421,010 passengers in 2004, up +23% on the year, the Civil Aviation Department said today.

“There are many reasons that fuelled the rise in traffic, but one of them is that more Moldovan migrant workers travelled by air,” said the department’s Deputy Director General, Evgheniy Dvornic.

This year should see similar growth, pushing the total over the 500,000 mark, he added.

Six domestic air carriers served Chisinau Airport last year, accounting for 73% of total traffic. They handled 307,700 passengers, up +24%.

Air Moldova ranked first among local airlines using the airport with 52% of all passengers. Moldovan Airlines and Tandem Aero followed.

Air Moldova offered flights to 12 destinations last year; Moscow and Istanbul were the most popular. Some 51,121 passengers flew to Moscow, up by +5.9% on the year. The passenger traffic on the Chisinau-Istanbul route rose by +25.1% to 44,252.

Turkish Airlines and Austrian Airlines led the six foreign air carriers that serviced the airport in 2004.
