UK. The British collectively spend £4.18 billion a year at airports while waiting to board their holiday flights, according to a new survey from Morgan Stanley Consumer Banking
The average shopper spends £120 at the airport on duty free products, last-minute essentials and currency exchange, according to the report.
Holidaymakers spent most on duty free items such as spirits and wine, fragrances and cosmetics and cigarettes, spending an average of £26.80 each, while foreign exchange expenditure averages a further £21.68.
Last-minute purchases such as cameras, film and batteries cost an average of £6.12, with £3.75 spent on sun lotion, toiletries and pharmaceuticals.
A further £8.76 was spent on food, and £4.72 went on magazines and books, while people spent an average of just over £13 on clothes, shoes, sunglasses and accessories.
Consumers in the south west of the UK were the biggest airport spenders, getting through an average of £194.40 each, followed by those from the east of England at £167.24.
At the other end of the scale, travellers from Yorkshire and Humberside and Wales spent the least at £62.70 and £65.31 respectively.
