Mohamed Mounib told The Moodie Report this morning that the changes would allow him to focus on strategic issues and expansion plans. “The appointment of the two General Managers will give me time to work in a different manner,” he said. “We have terminal three coming up and then the new airport which is supposed to be open in 2010, so I have a lot to do personally in terms of business development and structuring long-term partnerships.

“The General Managers will have the authority to conclude business in their respective areas and will be fully accountable for them.”

The whole duty free team is being consolidated in the office building used by Mounib near Abu Dhabi International Airport in the next month.

Mohamed Mounib: Shaking up the Abu Dhabi team for the challenges ahead

The personnel changes have been made to meet the challenges ahead, the operator said.

The inflight catering facilities are undergoing a huge expansion to take the daily output of food production from 15,000 meals a day to 30,000 by the end of this year.

The new airport is expected to handle 12 million passengers by 2011 and the retail space will be doubled by the end of next year. The airport design has been announced and construction is expected to start soon.

When opened in 2010, the facility will be capable of handling 20 million passengers in its first phase and when the second and third phases have been completed it will be able to handle 50 million passengers.

The retail space in the new airport is expected to be approximately 14,000sq m.
