Passenger traffic volumes at leading Mexican airports group ASUR slide by -7.2% year-on-year in October – 06/11/09

MEXICO. Passenger traffic at Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR) airports fell by -7.2% year-on-year in October to 1,007,641, the company reported today. The group operates nine airports in Mexico’s southeast, including Cancún International, the major gateway to the region.

International passenger traffic across the group’s portfolio slipped by -8.1% to 484,785 in the month, while domestic traffic fell -6.5% to 522,856 passengers.

International volumes at Cancún were down by -9.6% to 446,135 passengers in October. International traffic at the airport of Cozumel posted +12.2%, although from a small base (18,176 passengers), as did traffic at Merida Airport, which rose +6.1% year-on-year.

ASUR’s figures have been hit hard by the swine flu virus, which was first detected in Mexico last April.
