Perth domestic terminal employs innovative hub concept to drive spend

Weaving magic: Artist Carly Scoufos’ copper sculpture is suspended above the central retail and dining area

AUSTRALIA. Perth Airport has officially unveiled its retail and dining hub at the new T1 Domestic Terminal.

It blends a range of local and international food & drinks outlets and a central focus has been placed on maximising dwell times and passenger comfort, according to Perth Airport Executive General Manager Commercial Services Scott Norris.

“The terminal continues the trend we started at T2 and T3 of hubbing all retail at or near the gates to get the best of dwell times and to lower anxiety in terms of gate location relative to the shopping and eating areas,” he said.

“The customer base in T1 Domestic is varied – from FIFOs to business, leisure travellers and families – so our aim was to have something for everyone, and to raise the bar in providing interesting and varied cuisine.”

Among the food & drinks outlets are: Long Neck, a contemporary bar and restaurant with a menu designed by local chef Chris Taylor of Frasers Group Restaurants; Hungry Jack’s; Toby’s Estate, a specialist coffee shop; NOOODLES, which offers authentic Asian cuisine; Salsa’s Fresh Mex Grill; and Hudsons Coffee, which is located in the arrivals area on the ground floor.

A number of speciality retail outlets are also located in the central area, including Rip Curl, Sunglass Hut, Amcal Pharmacy, WHSmith and the Gadgetshop.

The signature piece of the terminal is a 30 metre long sculpture by Brisbane artist Carly Scoufos that is suspended above the central retail and dining area. The hand woven copper artwork, called Substratum, reflects the unique topography of the Western Australian.

Norris said early trading signs for the new retailers were “good”, with passengers also appreciating “the modern simplicity of the terminal and using it as we anticipated”.

As a key driver of spend, he said the hubbing concept employed at T1 Domestic Terminal would be continued at the larger STEP international terminal, which is currently in development.
