Porsche Design shakes up the design world – 27/06/06

Porsche Design’s award-winning shake pens start working on the flick of a wrist

GERMANY. The latest accolade to be heaped upon Porsche Design is a prestigious red dot award for its hi-tech shake pen.

According to the German firm, the pen was awarded “the red dot: best of the best award for highest design quality” for its timeless, purist design and innovative shake technology – it starts working on a sharp flick of the wrist.

Commenting on the award, Roland Heiler, Managing Director of the Porsche Design Studio in Austria, said: “Our mission is to develop products that have a functional and purist design and that deliver impressive technical innovations. This design philosophy owes itself to our founder, Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, and it has seen three decades of success for the Porsche Design brand, which is why we have made no move to change it.”

Since the Porsche Design Group was established at the end of 2003, the brand has received 20 prestigious awards. In 2006 alone, Porsche Design’s revamped kitchenware range and its P’7131 radio have also won the much-coveted iF Product Design Award. On the day of the award ceremony, the radio was presented with a rare iF gold award, which is seen internationally as the Design Oscar.

In 2005, Porsche Design’s P’8404 sunglasses, which feature a screwless lens mounting, received the red dot: best of the best award for highest design quality. The eyewear also won an iF Product Design Award. The P’1026 model, whose distinguishing features are a striking brow line and innovative lens mounting, was also presented with a red dot award.

At the ILM Award, an international awards ceremony for innovative design in leathergoods, Porsche Design’s simple, stylish P’2591 briefcase walked off with the prize for Best in Basics.

Corporate image accolades

Porsche Design’s new image has also been recognised. The company’s relaunched brand identity was devised in collaboration with the Munich corporate design agency KMS and realised by KW43 Brand Design, the Grey Network corporate identity specialists, in 2004. This resulted in a silver medal for outstanding design at the German Designers’ Club awards ceremony in 2005. It was also commended for high design quality in the red dot award communication category.

Additionally, Porsche Design’s new corporate image has been honoured by the renowned Art Directors’ Club (ADC), the German Communications Association, and Industrie Forum Design in Hanover. Also in 2005, Design Zentrum Essen presented it with the North Rhine-Westphalia Corporate Design Prize.

The images used in Porsche Design’s new advertising campaign, which were captured by photographer Kai-Uwe Gundlach, won a bronze medal in the ADC’s Photography category.

Finally, the new store concept, designed in co-operation with Italian architect Matteo Thun, received a red dot award for the way it combines contemporary Italian architecture with innovative hi-tech displays.
