Following the blockbuster success of the initially strictly limited-edition, travel retail-exclusive (TREX) Toblerone Pink Crush launch with Qatar Duty Free late last year, Mondelēz World Travel Retail (WTR) is to roll out the expression as a global TREX.
As reported, Mondelēz WTR and Qatar Duty Free turned Hamad International Airport pink in a spectacularly high-profile launch.

Mondelēz WTR said the launch attracted passengers who would not typically stop in duty free, drew new age and gender groups, and generated strong interest on social media. “Toblerone Pink Crush was doing more than creating buzz; it was bringing new shoppers into the category and changing shopping behavi0ur,” the company observed.
The numbers confirmed what the energy on the shop floor already showed, Mondelēz WTR noted. Toblerone Pink Crush delivered record growth for the brand and, most notably, for the entire chocolate category. A QR-code survey on every bar captured the traveller feedback directly, with one message coming through clearly: make Pink Crush more widely available.
Tell consumers they might miss out and a launch will sell out was a key learning
Together, the commercial results and traveller feedback built a clear data-backed business case for taking Pink Crush further, while illustrating what the company’s Destination: Value growth vision can deliver when the industry puts the traveller first, Mondelēz WTR added.
Toblerone Pink Crush stands out because of the story behind it, the company commented. It did not begin on a production line or in a brand planning session but instead as a dual response to the Destination: Value growth vision and Toblerone testing new ideas in very limited quantities.

Pink Crush was born there as a handcrafted, very limited edition, giving travellers the opportunity to experience something genuinely different, the company emphasised. From there, the journey moved quickly, from high exclusivity with Qatar Duty Free at Hamad International Airport to a global world travel retail-exclusive launch.
The ambition became a manufacturing ambition for fast reaction. Toblerone Pink Crush marks a first for Mondelēz International: it is the first-ever pink chocolate mass produced by the company.
The blend combines smooth white chocolate with raspberry and strawberry powder, creating a vibrant colour and a naturally fruity taste profile that is new to the Toblerone brand.
Bringing this innovation to life on a global scale called for world-class manufacturing capability, Mondelēz WTR pointed out. Bern, the home of Toblerone in Switzerland since 1908, is where up to 4 million Toblerone products are produced each day for more than 500 airports.
The first factory-produced Toblerone Pink Crush 340g bars (the brand’s signature travel retail format) are now leaving Switzerland for travel retail partners across the globe.

Mondelēz World Travel Retail, Vice President and Managing Director Joost Rosmuller commented, “Toblerone Pink Crush is a powerful example of Destination: Value in action. What started as a very limited edition in Doha is now being scaled for a global travel retail launch by our team in Switzerland, drawing on the world-class manufacturing expertise behind Toblerone.
“The response from travellers was clear, not just in social media buzz, but in category growth that set new records for the brand. We’re ready to build on that momentum with our partners and take Pink Crush to travellers around the world.” ✈
Comment: This story represents far more than the global roll-out of an initially limited-edition, retailer-exclusive launch, writes Martin Moodie.
Simultaneously, it is also an emphatic underlining of travel retail’s credentials as a showcase, testing ground and lucrative sales channel in its own right.
Moreover, it is testament equally to the power of genuine partnership in the channel and to the considerable stature of Qatar Duty Free as a retailer that embraces such collaborations with passion, pride and pizzazz.
There was so very much to like about this launch. From white glove service and spritzes to bespoke gift packs and certificates of authentication, the limited-edition TREX elevated Toblerone into a luxury gifting experience. That is quite some achievement given that Toblerone is unarguably the single brand most associated with duty-free shopping by consumers globally. Ubiquitousness transformed into exclusivity.
If Harvard Business School was to pick a TREX campaign as a case study for the channel, it might well choose this one. For there were so many other alluring and intriguing components to the launch.
For example, retailer and brand brought the exclusive to life at Hamad International with a high-impact Stunt Day activation on 12 January, taking Toblerone Pink Crush beyond a singular retail space and featuring it throughout the passenger journey, leading travellers to Qatar Duty Free stores.
This showcased how Mondelēz WTR’s well-articulated Destination: Value comes to life when a brand/retailer/airport combo engages shoppers along the path-to-purchase, not just in-store.
Branded buggies, high-profile influencer activities, even specially trained Pink Agents (pictured below) moving throughout the airport. Dressed in bright pink, the agents initially blended into the airport crowd before revealing the stunt day mechanic.
Travellers who scanned QR codes worn on the agents’ backs received an instant digital winning code, redeemable at Qatar Duty Free for a Toblerone Pink Crush bar.

Add in scarcity. Not only was Toblerone Pink Crush a retailer-specific launch but its availability was capped at 600 bars daily. Tell consumers they might miss out and a launch will sell out was the learning.

Wait. There’s more. In an extraordinarily generous and creative initiative in support of #KickCancerThon, the travel retail industry-wide visibility and fundraising campaign for cancer research created by The Moodie Davitt Report’s late Chief Operating Officer Sinead Moodie (1984-2026), Mondelēz WTR donated US$1 for every Toblerone Pink Crush bar sold through Qatar Duty Free.
The exclusive run completely sold out, raising a total of US$6,000 for crucial cancer research.
So now the erstwhile Qatar Duty Free TREX comes to the wider travel retail world. As a commercial proposition and to use modern parlance, it seems certain to be crushing it right across the channel. ✈
