Spring is in the air: Amsterdam Airport Schiphol’s business blooms as it opens mini-Keukenhof flower garden – 01/04/09

Keukenhof, the world’s largest flower garden, is celebrating its 60th anniversary with a special installation at Schiphol

NETHERLANDS. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is celebrating the first days of spring with the installation of a mini-Keukenhof flower garden at Schiphol Plaza – complete with 10,000 lilac, purple and white tulips.

Keukenhof, the world’s largest flower garden, has chosen its 60th anniversary as the perfect occasion to display flowers away from its main site, in the town of Lisse, for the first time. Keukenhof attracts more than 800,000 visitors every year, and most of them reach the gardens via the airport.

The mini-Keukenhof (kitchen garden) is located on the route of buses taking people to and from the Keukenhof visitor attraction. Developed by Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in collaboration with Keukenhof and Aviflora, the garden has a traditional flower stall where visitors can sit at picnic tables to take in the fragrances and colours.

Keukenhof Director Pieter de Vries said: “It’s our 60th anniversary this year, which is why we wanted to “˜say it with flowers’ and give national and international travellers a special Keukenhof welcome. This is the first time in our existence that we have left our own hallowed portals and planted a mini-Keukenhof at our national airport – a place where tourists from all corners of the world come together.”

“Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is a pioneering AirportCity, and an inspirational place,” said Schiphol Consumers Business Director Otto Ambagtsheer. “The mini-Keukenhof shows our incoming passengers that this is a hospitable country, and we are sure that it will put a spring in the step of departing passengers too. We are really proud that we will be welcoming passengers and visitors to Schiphol with these world-famous flowers grown on our native soil.”
