SSP captures four Avinor contracts for 19 convenience stores at key Norwegian airports

NORWAY. SSP Norway has secured four contracts covering 19 retail units at Avinor-operated airports across the country following a tender. The locations include Bergen, Trondheim, Stavanger and Oslo, with the first units scheduled to open in January 2023.

Some 17 of the units will be ‘Point’ outlets, the convenience store concept from SSP, already well-known at airports across Norway.

The concept focuses on travel essentials, magazines and newspapers as well as a wide range of hot and cold food and drinks. SSP said a Sense of Place element will be prominent in the stores, with many items to be sourced locally from across Norway.

Meanwhile, new store brand ‘Ymse’ will make its debut with a unit at Bergen and Stavanger airports. The concept has been developed specifically to cater to the needs of the substantial number of offshore industry workers who travel through these airports regularly.

The Ymse units will provide a wide variety of retail and convenience products, as well as favourite food items including hamburgers.

In support of SSP’s sustainability targets, the majority of food for all stores will be produced on site, minimising the use of pre-packaged products. In addition, there will be a focus on using locally-sourced meat, fish, free-range eggs and other food products where possible to reduce food miles.

In line with SSP’s drive to implement new technology solutions, numerous self-service options will be provided to appeal to new generations of travellers. One of the outlets will be entirely digitalised and self-service.

SSP added that the design of the units will use existing infrastructure wherever possible to reduce the environmental impact of store development processes.

SSP Norway Business Development Director Åste Haukvik said: “These airports expect to welcome around 30 million travellers each year and it’s a source of enormous pride that Avinor has entrusted us to bring our brands to even more of their customers.

“Our operations at Avinor airports date back more than 50 years, and over that time we have delivered high quality and commercially sound solutions.”

Avinor Commercial Director Iskra Skram said: “SSP has put considerable effort into developing their convenience offer and we congratulate them on winning this tender. We believe that the Point concept will contribute to improved customer experience across Avinor airports.”
