AUSTRALIA. Sydney Airport’s Master Plan 2045 has been approved by the Australian Government, setting down the vision for Australia’s busiest airport for two decades to come.
The Master Plan forecasts that Sydney Airport will welcome more than 72 million passengers annually by 2045, a +75% leap compared to today. This, the airport company has projected, will include 36.4 million international passengers and 36.2 million domestic and regional passengers.
Central to the plan is the proposed redevelopment of Sydney Airport’s domestic terminals 2 and 3. A new integrated terminal experience will bring together domestic, regional and international services.

Sydney Airport stated, “This upgrade will deliver improved comfort, efficiency and flexibility for millions of passengers each year. We’re introducing smarter security processes, automated passenger services and better facilities, while expanding our capacity to handle more flights, more destinations and a greater variety of aircraft.
“The plan also builds on our current A$200 million T2 upgrade, which is already improving the airport experience with faster check-ins, enhanced security and more modern amenities. Together, these projects will transform T2/T3 into a single, seamless precinct designed for the future of travel.”
The Master Plan was approved by Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King.
Sydney Airport CEO Scott Charlton said: “As Sydney grows, Sydney Airport must grow with it. Approval of Sydney Airport Master Plan 2045 provides a clear pathway to plan for future demand and invest in the infrastructure Sydney will need over the next two decades.
“As Australia’s international gateway, this plan ensures we can continue supporting tourism, trade, investment and jobs while delivering the capacity needed for future generations. Importantly, it provides a framework for growing sustainably and responsibly, minimising environmental impacts and working closely with the communities surrounding the airport.”
The Master Plan incorporates Sydney Airport’s five-year Airport Environment Strategy, which outlines actions to reduce emissions, build climate resilience and support more sustainable airport operations. ✈
