TAV Airports unveils Passenger Terminal Building in Skopje

The new 40,000sq m Passenger Terminal Building will increase the capacity at Skopje to 4 million passengers per year


MACEDONIA. TAV Airports has officially inaugurated its new Passenger Terminal Building at Skopje Alexander the Great Airport in Macedonia, increasing the annual capacity of the airport to four million passengers, following a €100 million investment programme.

The opening ceremony was attended by the President of Macedonia Gjorge Ivanov, Macedonian Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, Macedonian Transport Minister Mile Janakievski, TAV Airports Board Chairman Hamdi Akın and TAV Airports CEO M. Sani Sener.

Commenting on the inauguration Macedonian Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski said: “Today we are bearing witness to an historical event in Macedonia. By taking a significant step in becoming one of the major flight hubs throughout Eastern Europe and the Balkans, we are bringing the new Terminal Building of Skopje Alexander the Great Airport into service.

“I take pride in inaugurating the airport on the 20th Anniversary of Declaration of Independence of Macedonia, which had been constructed by TAV Airports. I would like to congratulate all those who contributed. The accomplishments of TAV in Macedonia have set a good model for many other Turkish investors.”

TAV Airports CEO M. Sani Sener said “We are happy to be contributing to the development of Macedonia which we have long-established cultural relations with, by renovating the entrance gate to the capital Skopje to reflect the dynamic and modern structure of the country.

“Our contribution will continue to grow through the fast, safe and cheerful service we provide to our passengers. We will also continue our growth within geographical regions that we see as target markets and will increase our success in the global economy by combining our fast decision making skills with our ability to bring together different cultures,” Sener added.

Works carried out at Skopje Alexander the Great Airport

– New Passenger Terminal Building – 40,000sq m
– Expansion of the runway – 500m
– Improved car park area – 42,500sq m (1300 vehicle capacity)
– New Management Building – 5,000sq m
– New Cargo Terminal – 40,000 ton capacity a year
– New Fire Station
– Moving the existing military infrastructure

The new airport is anticipated to become the transport center of the Balkans due to its strategic location. The opening ceremony formed part of the country’s 20th anniversary celebrations commemorating Macedonia’s independence.

The duty free concession in the new terminal at Skopje Alexander the Great Airport is operated by ATÜ, a
joint venture between TAV Airports and Unifree.

Last April, TAV Airport also renovated St. Paul the Apostle Airports in Ohrid, one of the country’s most popular tourism destinations. TAV Airports won the operation rights for both airports for 20 years, until March 2030.
