UAE. Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC) has appointed a joint venture led by Turkish airport group TAV to build the new Midfield Terminal Building (MTB) at Abu Dhabi International Airport. ADAC said that the 700,000sq m building, which will be opened in 2017, is a “cornerstone of ADAC’s vision to become the world’s leading airport group”.
The joint venture between TAV, CCC and Arabtec will commence work on the contract, valued at AED10.8 billion, in the third quarter of 2012. The terminal will have capacity for 27 million passengers, and will include a high-end retail offer of more than 18,000sq m and almost 10,000sq m for food & beverage. A further 27,500sq m plus will be devoted to airline hospitality lounges, a transit hotel and a heritage and culture museum.

ADAC said the design of the new terminal is focused on passenger experience and meets the highest quality and service standards, including International Air Transport Association (IATA) service level A, the highest levels of space allocation for passenger processing areas. The building was designed by lead designer Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates with Ove Arup, NACO and BNP Associates.
ADAC Chairman, His Excellency Ali Majed Al Mansoori said: “Abu Dhabi Airports Company is looking ahead to an exciting five years of growth focusing on increasing traffic at Abu Dhabi International Airport and on expanding the airport’s infrastructure to support this growth. Leading and supervising the delivery of this infrastructure is a responsibility central to ADAC’s commitment to provide the best for Abu Dhabi, travellers and airlines.”
TAV Group President and CEO Mustafa Sani Sener said: “We are extremely happy to be awarded the Abu Dhabi Airport tender, achieving such success and adding this $3 billion project to our portfolio. We will be building one of the most impressive terminals in the world through this project that we are undertaking with our partners.”
The project will include two key phases: the four-year construction phase, followed by the Operational Readiness Assessment phase, where all aspects of the terminal will be tested over a nine-month period to ensure readiness from the first day of operation.

Operational highlights of the new terminal include:
• Piers accommodating up to 65 aircraft, including the Airbus A-380;
• Check-in capable of handling around 8,500 passengers per hour;
• Check-in by 165 counters and 48 self-service kiosks;
• Baggage system processing over 19,000 bags per hour with 10 reclaim carousels;
• 136 security screening lanes for passengers, with a further 25 for staff.
