Thailand international traffic boosted by Don Muang reopening

THAILAND. International traffic through six of Thailand’s main airports increased by +17% year-on-year in October, boosted by the reopening of Bangkok Don Muang Airport.

Data released by Airports of Thailand shows a total of 3.99 million international passengers passed through the six airports – Suvarnabhumi, Don Muang, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Hat Yai and Mae Fah Luang-Chiang Rai – during the month.

With domestic traffic registering a +15.25% increase, total passenger numbers at all the airports reached 6.4 million in October, up +16.43%.

Cumulative international traffic for the first ten months of 2012 hit 38.6 million, up +9.34% on the same period last year, with total traffic reaching 61.8 million, up +10.87%

At Bangkok Suvarnabhumi, international passenger numbers rose by +6% to 3.18 million, bringing the total number for the year to 33.5 million, up +7.28% to the same point last year.

Meanwhile, developments at Don Muang Airport were also reflected by a +6,708% increase in international passengers at the airport to 330,388.

Don Muang officially reopened to international traffic on 1 October, with AirAsia and other low cost carriers using it to ease capacity pressure at Suvarnabhumi.

As reported, King Power was awarded a ten-year contract as the exclusive duty free concessionaire at the airport.

Based on existing numbers passenger numbers at Suvarnabhumi, international traffic through Don Muang is expected to reach six million passengers per annum.
