Turbulent year at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport draws to a close with passenger traffic down -6.3% – 22/01/09

THAILAND. Total passenger numbers at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport slipped by -6.3% to 38.6 million in 2008, compared with 2007, Airports of Thailand (AoT) has announced.

Within this, international passenger traffic hit 31.6 million, down by just over -5% year on year. Domestic passenger volumes fell by -11.5% to 7 million.

The political unrest which forced the airports to close had a major impact on passenger volumes in November and December. In November, total passenger numbers at Bangkok fell by -26% year-on-year (to 2.6 million), followed by a fall of -37% in December (to 2.3 million).

AoT also reported results across its network of Thai airports. Total passenger numbers handled by Thailand’s airports in 2008 were 54.4 million, down by -4.8% on a year earlier. International passenger volumes were 34.4 million, down by -4.3%, while domestic traffic fell by -5.6% to 20 million.
