UAE General Civil Aviation Authority launches inaugural art competition

GCAA General Manager H.E. Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi: “”˜UAE Aviation Art’ aims to engage with aviation fans and artists alike”

UAE. The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has launched an art competition as part of its “˜Love Your Sky’ campaign, aimed at raising awareness of flight and passenger safety across the UAE.

Titled “˜UAE Aviation Art’, the inaugural competition invites all UAE residents to submit aviation-inspired photography, with the best submissions to go on display in a public exhibition and used widely in GCAA publications. Winners will also receive the new Xperia 3 Z3 smartphone from Sony Mobile, as well as tickets to any destination around the world, in addition to other prizes.

The GCAA has launched the competition across its dedicated social media platforms, with Instagram leading the campaign. It is said to be the latest initiative in a series of social media campaigns for the authority.

GCAA Assistant Director, Strategies and International Affairs Laila Hareb: “We urge people to visualise and use their imagination”

To enter, participants simply have to post a digital image of their work on Instagram by using the dedicated hashtag #UAEAviationArt.

GCAA General Manager H.E. Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi commented: “The GCAA has embarked on its next stages of digital growth, in line with Dubai’s Vision 2021 and its aspirations to become one of the world’s leading governments in terms of its digital and art activities. “˜UAE Aviation Art’ aims to engage with aviation fans and artists alike.”

GCAA Assistant Director, Strategies and International Affairs Laila Hareb said: “We are excited to see how the spirit of aviation can be expressed and captured. We urge people to visualise and use their imagination. It can be travel and escapism, but also photography of abstract art and emotions. It can all be captured on camera. We appreciate local art while we have deliberately kept the criteria for entry wide in order to attract as many people as possible.”

Competition judge Karim Nafatini, a commercial pilot by day, has received local attention online for his birds’ eye view photography taken from the cockpit of his plane. He believes the GCAA’s first-ever aviation art competition will reveal the depth and diversity of the UAE’s arts scene.

Karim said: “The competition will no doubt showcase that the UAE is rich with artistic talent. There is a real vibrancy in the breadth of the competition subject matter – aviation – with endless possibilities for inspiration.”

The competition is now open and runs for one month with a deadline for submissions at midnight UAE time, 31 October 2014. For more information visit www.loveyoursky.com.
