Video of the Day – “Think of a place on Earth where you can’t shop online”

FRANCE/INTERNATIONAL. Today’s video offers a timely reminder of the transformational capability inflight WiFi has brought to onboard retail, while explaining the rationale behind French inflight digital solutions company Moment’s acquisition of onboard ecommerce specialist Airfree earlier this month.

The film is not new (at one point it features former KrisShop CEO Chris Pok, who left the role in September 2022) but its message remains relevant.

“Is there a place on Earth where you can’t shop online? On Earth rarely but in the sky things haven’t changed in 70 years,” the voiceover begins.

“This poor customer experience leads to declining inflight sales and even for many airlines withdrawal from the business, whereas the development of inflight connectivity has unleashed massive e-retail opportunities.”

The film then describes the way in which Airfree marries inflight connectivity with on the ground fulfilment capability to transform the passenger experience – and the airline’s ancillary revenues. It’s a well-made film, well worth watching.

Commenting on the Airfree deal, Moment said: “With this acquisition, Moment has taken another major step forward in its expansion. Its range of connected services is designed to meet the growing expectations of passengers, while generating additional revenues for airlines.

“With Airfree’s innovative solution, already adopted by leading airlines such as Singapore Airlines, Moment is now able to offer an unprecedented onboard marketplace solution, connected to over 350 duty-free stores worldwide.

“Passengers can access a wide selection of products via the seat-back screens or their personal devices, far beyond the items traditionally available inflight. They can order securely in real time and choose from several delivery options, whether onboard, at the airport or directly to their home.

“Airfree is distinguished by a patented technology that optimises inflight bandwidth. This innovation enables airlines to offer a high-performance service in real time, even under restricted connectivity conditions. As a result, airlines have new opportunities to generate additional revenue while enriching their passengers’ user experience.” ✈
