CHINA. In what it described as “entering a new chapter”, Wangfujing Duty Free has been awarded the departures duty-free contracts at Harbin Taiping International and Mudanjiang Hailang International airports following open tenders.

Harbin Taiping serves Harbin, the capital of Northeast China’s Heilongjiang province, while Mudanjiang Airport is located in the south of Xi’an District, Mudanjiang City, also in Heilongjiang Province.

Wangfujing Duty Free said the new concessions lay a solid foundation for enriching its duty-free business and broadening its presence across travel retail channels. The company pledged to create a new benchmark for airport duty-free in Northeast China.

The company, a subsidiary of Beijing-based Wangfujing Group – China’s oldest department store retailer – said it will leverage almost 70 years of “profound retail heritage” equipped with a new supply chain management system and a “dual-wheel drive” pattern of duty-paid and duty-free.

Wangfujing’s first department store opened in central Beijing in 1955. The 39,000sq m store pictured above remains among the capital’s best-known shopping destinations.

Wangfujing Duty Free described Harbin as a city “born from water and prospering from roads”, emphasising its role as the premier international transportation hub of the Eurasian Continental Bridge and air corridor.

As Northeast Asia’s central aviation hub, Taiping International Airport will serve as the gateway to the 9th Asian Winter Games Harbin 2025 {Image: Harbin2025.com)

Mudanjiang, also known as the Snow City, is an important strategic fulcrum of the China-Mongolia-Russia Economic Corridor and the Longjiang Silk Road Belt. It is also seen as a bridgehead and hub for China’s opening up to Russia along the border, Wangfujing Duty Free noted.

The retailer said it will strive to create an online and offline business model for the two Heilongjiang Province airports with customer experience as the core. This will help Northeast China’s booming tourism retail sector and promote regional economic revitalisation, the company added.

Wangfujing Duty Free has drawn inspiration from ice, snow and the culture of the two cities, with tailored store design aligned to the style and vibes of the respective aiports.

The duty-free shopping space has been carefully curated based on airport consumer profiles, business traveller preferences, along with local culture and a focus on uniqueness.

Wangfujing Group was granted a duty-free licence in 2020, thus becoming the eighth Mainland China player in the sector.

Noting “the beauty of the north” in Heilongjiang, Wangfujing Duty Free said it will inherit and carry forward Wangfujing Group’s ‘one fire’ spirit (see company oath at the head of this story). This will result in a Northeast airport flagship duty-free store notable for personalised brand building, complementary digital technology and the “ultimate art of service”, the company promised. ✈
