Zürich Airport returns to strong passenger growth in November; commercial sales sustain recovery – 14/12/09

SWITZERLAND. Zürich Airport has posted an encouraging +3.8% year-on-year rise in November passenger traffic to 1,693,610.

For the first 11 months of 2009 the passenger volume was down by just -1.4%, a commendable performance given the gravity of the global economic crisis that has clouded the entire year.

Total commercial turnover (net retail and food & beverage sales to consumers) during November reached CHF36.6 million (US$35.5 million), a drop of -2.6% versus the same month in 2008. Airside sales fell by -4.8% in November (down a sharp -11.1% for the year), while landside sales were flat – and up by +2.7% for the first 11 months.

Turnover per departing passenger this November was CHF43.2 (US$41.90), a decline of -6.2% year-on-year. Again, airside sales drove that fall, declining by -8.3% in the month.

Chief Commercial Officer Peter Eriksson noted: “The strong passenger growth in November confirms the positive trend since September. Sales are also picking up, though they are not yet fully recovered compared to the previous year, but well under way.

“2009 will finally look better than we could ever have imagined early in the year. Next year will be great, with lots of exciting new opportunities.”

Transfer passenger numbers rose by +4.1% to 673,186 in November (+2.8% year to date). The transfer rate which stood at 39.7% last November is currently at 39.8% (36.4% for the first 11 months). Local passengers (originating or departing from Zurich) have risen by +3.5% to 1,013,895 compared to the previous November (year to date -3.7%), a continuation of the regained positive growth trend in October.
