Sydney Airport and Heinemann bring arrivals shopping into the baggage hall

The new arrivals duty-free store offers passengers a second opportunity to shop duty free while awaiting their luggage. Note the close proximity to the baggage belt.

AUSTRALIA. Sydney Airport and Heinemann Australia have unveiled Australia’s first dedicated international arrivals store within a baggage reclaim hall.

Developed in response to customer insights, the offering – which is additional to the existing arrivals duty-free offer – gives passengers a final shopping opportunity between clearing immigration and collecting their bags.

By locating the retail offering within the arrivals precinct, Sydney Airport and Heinemann said they are bringing shopping closer to the way passengers move through the airport, delivering a fresh approach to airport retail that better aligns with evolving passenger needs.

The store features a curated assortment of liquor and fragrances, giving arriving international passengers access to a selection of premium brands before departing the airport.

Sydney Airport Executive General Manager Commercial, Mark Zaouk said the partnership with Heinemann represents the airport’s continued investment in the passenger experience and reflects the strong collaboration between the airport and Heinemann.

“Sydney Airport welcomes 42 million passengers each year, and we’re focused on continually improving every stage of the journey, including the retail experience.

“Working with Heinemann allows us to bring together global expertise, premium brands and innovative retail concepts to deliver a more engaging and seamless experience for our passengers.

“This investment supports our broader vision to create a world-class airport that reflects the needs of modern travellers while strengthening Sydney Airport’s role as Australia’s international gateway.”

Heinemann Asia Pacific CEO Rajshree Dugar said the partnership with Sydney Airport is driven by a shared ambition to deliver a best-in-class retail offering for passengers travelling through the airport.

“We’re proud to partner with Sydney Airport to deliver a unique retail experience that combines internationally recognised brands, local Australian products and a customer-focused approach backed by data, insights and innovation.

“Having operated at Sydney Airport for more than a decade, we have seen first-hand how traveller expectations continue to evolve.

“Our goal is to create a retail environment that is welcoming, memorable and convenient, giving passengers greater choice and one final opportunity to shop before continuing their journey.

“Together with Sydney Airport, we are investing in experiences that meet the needs of today’s travellers while setting a new benchmark for airport retail in Australia.”

Sydney Airport said the arrivals experience is part of ongoing investment in customer experience, delivering a more seamless, intuitive and convenient journey for passengers.

Comment: This is a smart move by Sydney Airport and its anchor retail partner Heinemann, writes Martin Moodie.

The baggage hall offer is a notable attempt to increase shopping penetration, designed to spur impulse purchasing while passengers are waiting to collect their luggage.

It is a formula successfully adopted by Dubai Duty Free, for example (see videos below) to ease the shopping experience.

With waiting times sometimes stretching for more than 30 minutes post flights arriving at the gate, that gives Heinemann access to a captive (albeit sometimes frustrated) consumer rather than one who has skipped the pre-baggage hall arrivals shopping offer in a rush to claim their luggage, clear customs and bio-security and exit the airport.

The retailer’s job then becomes to turn captive into captivated.
