Beyond keywords: Lotte Duty Free advances product discovery with AI-led search solution

Lotte Duty Free is making artificial intelligence an increasingly integral part of the shopping journey, helping customers find and assess products more efficiently

SOUTH KOREA. Lotte Duty Free has today (1 October) rolled out an AI Product Search function on its mobile app, alongside expanded AI-powered experiences across the shopping journey.

The solution allows customers to search using natural language rather than specific product names or keywords.

By describing a situation, preference or desired condition in their own words, customers can receive product recommendations based on the intent behind their search. The AI analyses the request and identifies products that best match those needs.

Customers can describe their requested items in natural language, from a light perfume for a summer holiday to cosmetics priced around KRW100,000 (US$73) for a gift. AI analyses the combination of price, purpose and preferences to identify relevant products.

The solution shifts product discovery beyond keyword-based search by interpreting what the customer is looking for in context, including the purpose behind the request.

In addition, Lotte Duty Free is extending AI across the next stages of the shopping journey.

AI-powered product recommendations use customer behaviour data to identify products likely to be of interest, while AI-generated product and review summaries provide concise overviews of key features and customer feedback.

Lotte Group continues to broaden its digital retail ecosystem, including ChatGPT-powered customer services designed to simplify product discovery

The launch builds on Lotte Duty Free’s earlier AI initiatives, including a generative AI-powered shopping service introduced in July using OpenAI’s ChatGPT platform.

The service gives customers direct access to Lotte Duty Free’s shopping platform through ChatGPT, without the need for a standalone app or website, allowing customers to explore bestseller lists and product recommendations, and discover products featured in special promotions.

The AI Product Search launch extends Lotte Duty Free’s use of AI across the customer journey, from search and recommendations to product information, reviews and generative AI channels. The retailer will also expand AI applications across internal operations.

Lotte Duty Free E-Commerce Head Alice Yoo said, “AI’s role is not to do all the shopping on behalf of customers, but to enhance convenience in the process of customers finding, comparing and selecting products.

“We will continue to incorporate AI throughout the entire duty-free shopping process to expand shopping experiences where customers can more easily and conveniently discover products that suit them.” ✈
