UK. Aberdeen International Airport is advancing its £2.5 million (US$3.3 million) retail transformation programme, with expanded retail and dining facilities and passenger-focused enhancements planned ahead of completion in 2027.

Under the ABZ Reimagined strategy, the post-security WHSmith and InMotion stores will be combined into a single extended unit, creating more retail space and an enhanced shopping environment.

The programme will also include expanded restaurant facilities with additional seating, giving passengers greater choice and flexibility to dine and relax before departure.

With its aviation roots dating back decades, Aberdeen Airport is looking to the future with a modernised retail and dining experience shaped around evolving passenger needs

The redevelopment forms part of the airport’s broader investment programme, which is focused on reshaping the passenger experience in line with evolving traveller needs.

The move also builds on the appointment of Portland Design earlier this year to support the development of the airport’s future retail proposition.

The consultancy has produced a comprehensive set of Retail Design Guidelines that will underpin the planned investment across the terminal.

A larger combined WHSmith and InMotion unit will form a key part of the retail revamp

The framework is intended to ensure consistency across all retail and F&B developments, with a focus on sense of place, design quality and commercial performance.

The transformation will be rolled out over the coming months, with enhancements completed in phases ahead of summer 2027.

The competitive tender process continues for several retail and F&B opportunities, with further details on future operators and brands to be revealed in due course.

AGS Airports Head of Retail and Development Craig Norton said, “ABZ Reimagined is all about creating a modern airport experience that reflects the ambitions of the northeast of Scotland and meets the expectations of today’s travellers.

“These latest improvements represent another important milestone in that journey and will deliver tangible benefits for the millions of passengers who travel through Aberdeen International Airport each year.

“From enhanced retail facilities and expanded dining space to an improved coffee offering, we’re investing in the areas that matter most to our passengers. As work continues, customers will begin to see the transformation taking shape throughout the terminal.

“This investment demonstrates our commitment to continually improving the passenger experience while strengthening the airport’s role as a key gateway for the region.”
