Aberdeen Airport names Portland Design to lead retail and dining transformation project

UK. Aberdeen International Airport has appointed Portland Design to support a £2.5 million (US$3.4 million) retail transformation programme, marking a key step in a wider commercial overhaul.

The project will see the majority of retail and food & beverage units refreshed or redeveloped over the next 16 months.

Described by operator AGS Airports as the Aberdeen hub’s most ambitious commercial upgrade programmes in recent years, the initiative sits within its long-term ‘AGS Reimagined’ strategy, aimed at delivering modern, sustainable and passenger-focused environments across its UK airport portfolio.

Portland Design was selected following a competitive tender to define the future vision for the airport’s commercial proposition.

The consultancy has since produced a comprehensive set of Retail Design Guidelines that will underpin the planned investment across the terminal.

The framework is intended to ensure consistency across all retail and F&B developments, with a focus on sense of place, design quality and commercial performance.

Drawing on customer insights and regional identity, AGS noted the guidelines aim to create a contemporary offer rooted in the character of Aberdeen and the wider north-east of Scotland, while aligning with evolving passenger expectations.

Portland’s design approach emphasises improved visibility, intuitive layouts and high-quality environments to support dwell time, brand differentiation and commercial returns.

AGS told The Moodie Davitt Report that tenders for new concessions to feature in the redeveloped commercial area are likely to be issued later this year.

AGS Airports Retail Director Tom Hack said, “Aberdeen International Airport is at the beginning of a transformative period for our retail facilities, with more than £2.5 million being invested and most units set for change over the next year and a half.

“This represents a major commitment to improving the passenger experience and strengthening the airport’s commercial proposition.

“Following a robust tender process, Portland Design was the clear choice to help us define the vision for our next generation of retail and food & beverage experiences.

“Our passengers, many of whom travel with us frequently, expect an offer that reflects who they are and the region we serve.

“It’s not just about what’s on the shelves, it’s about design quality, service style, flow and ultimately creating a welcoming environment that embodies the spirit of the north-east of Scotland.

“Portland has helped distil that spirit into a clear and practical set of retail guidelines that will guide every future commercial development.

“Their work ensures we are entering the tender phase with confidence, clarity and a shared ambition for quality.”

Portland Design Associate Director Graham Needham commented, “We have enjoyed collaborating with the team at Aberdeen International Airport to create a locally rooted commercial experience that enhances the passenger journey while driving commercial success.”
