Airports have a key role to play in championing a city’s or country’s craft, culture, tastes and traditions. For visitors they offer the first and last impression of the locality, for that city’s citizens they provide a source of civic pride. An arts & culture programme connects passengers to a place in the same way an airport connects them to the world. Many airport companies embrace that role with pride and passion as we explore in our regular column.

USA. Chicago Department of Aviation brought the city’s creative spirit to O’Hare International Airport with Flag Feast, a colourful display of 36 flags created by local artists through an initiative led by the Design Museum of Chicago.
Unveiled on 14 August in Terminal 3, the installation celebrates the city’s history, culture and creative community, with each flag reflecting an artist’s personal perspective on place, identity and possibility.

Flag Feast made its debut at the Field Day event at Navy Pier before being featured at Taste of Chicago and arriving at O’Hare International, where it is showcasing Chicago’s creative community to a global audience through late September. ✈
