Arrivals to China for January–November surpass 2004 full-year record – 20/12/05

CHINA. Over a million more arrivals were recorded in China for January to November this year than during the whole of 2004.

Just under 110.1 million arrivals were recorded for the 11-month period, up +11.0% year-on-year.

Arrivals by foreigners from January to November reached 18.7 million, an increase of +20.8% year-on-year, while Hong Kong residents posted 64.0 million arrivals, an increase of +5.6%. Arrivals from Macau residents came to 23.6 million, up +19.8% year-on-year, and Taiwanese arrivals numbered 3.8 million, a growth of +12.6%

Fourteen of China’s 16 main arrivals markets posted double-digit growth for the January-November period. Only Indonesia and Japan (hit by adverse publicity and subsequent demonstrations over Japan’s war past) posted single-digit growth, at +8.1% and +2.4% respectively. France led the increase with +33.5%, followed by Australia (+30.7%) and Thailand (+28.4%). South Korea, now China’s largest arrivals market, posted a +26.3% growth.

In November alone, arrivals to China totalled 9.9 million, an increase of +5.9%. However, four of China’s 16 main arrivals markets posted declines for November. Arrivals from Singapore fell -1.1%, Malaysia -2.1%, Japan -6.9% and Indonesia -19.1%.
