Brasilia and Viracopos airports prepare for big terminal openings

BRAZIL. Privatised airports Brasilia International and Campinas Viracopos are on track to have new commercial spaces open ahead of their May deadlines.

Daniel Ketchibachian, Commercial Director of Brasilia International Airport operator Inframérica, reports that all works in the airport’s terminal expansion are on track for conclusion in May: “The commercial aspects are completed and will be finalised before the World Cup,” he confirmed.

“Inframérica is working to deliver a more modern and comfortable terminal for passengers and to expand the number of airlines at Brasilia Airport.”

Ready for the Cup: the new pier at Brasilia International

Completion of the new terminal pier will give Dufry space to expand its international Arrivals and Departures stores to 1,069sq m, almost three times its current footprint.

Dufry will also inaugurate a 1,600sq m duty paid store in domestic Departures.

New food & beverage concessions launching at Brasilia in May include Red Lobster, Koni Sushi and McDonald’s, with the 500sq m Mini-Stadium run by Budweiser to tap into interest in the 2014 FIFA World Cup (which kicks off on 12 June).

Viracopos Airport will open its new terminal on 11 May and promises that all stores will be operational ahead of the World Cup.

Nuance will make its South American debut at Viracopos, with a Departures duty free store of approximately 700sq m plus 1,900sq m of domestic duty paid and speciality retail, on a ten-year concession.

Dufry also has a ten-year deal, encompassing a 550sq m Arrivals duty free store and a 150sq m Departures store, in addition to its stores in the airport’s existing terminal.

Food & beverage options in the new terminal will extend from international brands such as Pizza Hut, Starbucks and Subway to local operators Romana, Juice and Toast, Octavio Café and Premiatto.

“We have a good mix of international travel retail operators, and international and national brands operating together with local brands to give a sense of belonging,” commented Aluizio Margarido, Commercial Director of Aeroportos Brasil Viracopos.

A full report on commercial initiatives at Brasilia, Viracopos and Guarulhos airports will be published in The Moodie Report March Print Edition, out in coming days.
