BWI Marshall unveils US$125 million plan to improve airport operations

US. Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley has announced a US$125 million multi-phase development plan for Baltimore/Washington Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI Marshall).

The plan provides for a new secure connector to be constructed between Concourse D and Concourse E, the creation of a new security checkpoint serving domestic and international travellers, and the reconfiguration of airline gates to support additional international flights.

BWI has five concourses which have not been previously connected airside. In April 2013 a new airside connector was opened to link Concourse C (14 airline gates) with Concourses A and B (26 airline gates). Concourse C’s gate hold rooms will be improved, while new food and retail concessions along the B/C Connector and on Concourse C will provide passengers freedom of movement and choice of concessions between the concourses.

The expansion of the checkpoint will provide additional congestion relief and reduce the expenses of maintaining two checkpoints which will decrease the operational cost of each of the concourses.

Further, because of the reduction in time spent at the checkpoint, passengers will have more time to explore concession options between the connected concourses which should result in a higher passenger spend and increased revenues for the airport.
