Building a Healthier Chicago |
USA. On 11 July restaurant operators at Chicago Midway International Airport announced a collaboration with Building a Healthier Chicago to improve healthy food choices for travellers.
Through Building a Healthier Chicago, nutritional information will now be available on menu items at Midway’s restaurants enabling people to make more informed food choices about what they choose to eat. Building a Healthier Chicago is a collaborative of more than 150 local and national stakeholders dedicated to improving the health of Chicago.
Participating airport restaurants include Harry Caray’s, Manny’s Deli, Tuscany, Let Them Eat Cake, Taylor Street Market and Oak Street Beach Café. The revamped restaurant menus are now in use.
Mac One Midway Premier Restaurant Group, the airport’s largest F&B operator, has earned healthy food certification for 10 of its restaurants by F.I.T. City/Chicago.
Restaurants earn F.I.T. City certification by complying with strict menu criteria. Required are two menu choices, other than salad, whose primary ingredients are fresh fruits and vegetables, and two menu items that primarily feature whole grains.
Restaurants are also required to use plant-based cooking oils in substitution for unhealthy oils and artificial trans fats. In addition, they are urged to support local sustainable agriculture through the purchase of fresh produce, meat and seafood from local suppliers.
“On behalf of Mayor Rahm Emanuel, we are so pleased the Building a Healthier Chicago programme has arrived at Midway International Airport. It’s a great initiative that is in line with the Chicago Lives Healthy Program that the Mayor launched in 2012 for City employees,” said Chicago Department of Aviation Commissioner Rosemarie S. Andolino.
“By offering more healthy food options at Midway, we can help promote a healthier lifestyle for the millions of travellers and thousands of employees at Midway.”
