EUROPE. Overall passenger traffic at European airports increased by +4.1% in April 2005 compared with April 2004, according to Airports Council International’s monthly Airport Traffic Report – April 2005. ACI Europe noted that an early Easter holiday this year had “somewhat depressed” traffic figures for April 2005 compared with the previous year.
The overall figure for movements at European airports climbed +5.3% in April 2005 when compared with the same month last year.
ACI Europe said that passenger figures for April 2005 once again indicated that Group 4 airports (airports welcoming less than 5 million passengers per year) had the largest increase in traffic – with an average upswing of +8.9% when compared with April 2004 – and an average pick-up of +21.4% when compared with April 2003.
Airports welcoming more than 25 million passengers per year (Group 1), airports welcoming between 10 and 25 million passengers (Group 2) and airports welcoming between 5 and 10 million passengers (Group 3) reported an average change of +2.6%, +3.5% and +5.1% respectively when compared with the same month last year. The same comparison of April 2005 with April 2003 demonstrates an average increase of +16.1%, +17.1% and +15.3% respectively.
Examples of airports that experienced the highest increase in passenger traffic per group, when comparing April 2005 with the previous year, include:
• Group 1 airports – Munich (+10.6%), Madrid Barajas (+6.8%), and Paris Charles de Gaulle (+2.5%);
• Group 2 airports – Moscow – Domodedovo (+14.8%), Oslo (+10.1%), and Berlin (+8.8%);
• Group 3 airports – Budapest (+30.7%), Warsaw (+23.9%) and Cologne (+23.6%);
• Group 4 airports – Katowice (+257.0%), Riga (+85.3%) and Bournemouth (+71.8%).
The monthly Airport Traffic Report includes 92 airports in total.
